Canam-Buildings is proud to have contributed to the construction of the new Jean Coutu Distribution Center and Headquarters in Varennes that will officially open to no less than 1,100 employees on October 26th.

For this project, Canam supplied joists, trusses, bridgings, purlins and girts, welded sections (WWF), steel deck and the acoustic deck for offices. Joists of 24 m (80 ft) long have been installed in the warehouse. This project was realized with the BuildMaster approach.

Jean-Coutu

In addition to offices and distribution center, this building of 860,500 ft2 includes:

  • a training center
  • a swimming pool
  • a cafeteria
  • a nursery
  • a three-story atrium

Outside, communal gardens and a walking trail will also be made available to employees.

Staff can move into the new headquarters from October 26th until mid-December. As for the distribution center, it will be operational in January 2016.

Canam-Buildings and Canam-Bridges stood out prominently at the CISC Design Awards, taking home two awards each at the gala held on October 29th under the theme “Contribution of the Steel Industry to the World of Music and the Arts”.

Industrial Projects

Canam-Buildings received an award in the Industrial Projects category for its participation in the PJC Head Office and Distribution Center project in Varennes, Quebec. In addition to housing administrative offices and a warehouse, this 860,500 sq. ft. (79,943 m2) facility includes a fitness center, a daycare, a cafeteria and many other commodities for the employees. This project included joists – some measuring up to 80 ft. (24 m) – girders, bridgings, purlins and girts, welded wide-flange sections (WWF), steel deck and acoustic deck for the office section. The distribution center is due to become operational in January 2016.

Jury Favorite

Canam-Buildings took home the Jury Favorite award for its contribution to the Cogeco Amphitheatre project in Trois-Rivières. This complex structure of 150,700 sq. ft. (14,000 m2) features two partitions at the rear of the building, called for specially shaped joists with large cantilevers and sloped lower chords in order to form the particular triangular shape. In addition to the joists, which had to be delivered in two sections and bolted directly onto the structure, girders and steel deck were also fabricated for this project. Inaugurated in July 2015, the construction has a vast stage and covered seating for 3,500 spectators as well as an outdoor landscaped amphitheatre.

Projects Outside Quebec

Canam-Bridges received an award in the Projects Outside Quebec category for its participation in the Hunt Club Pathway Connection to the Southeast Transitway Station project, a 246-ft. (75 m) pedestrian bridge erected over the Ottawa Airport Parkway to link the Hunt Club community and the Southeast Transitway in Ottawa, Ontario. The bridge structure is composed of three orthotropic steel deck panels – with the longest span measuring 167 ft. (51 m) – and required complex fabrication operations during the assembly and welding of the various components. The bridge opened to pedestrians and cyclists in November 2014.

Bridge Projects

Canam-Bridges also received an award in the Bridge Projects category for its participation in the construction of the Des Allumettes Bridge, a 919-ft. (280 m) highway bridge crossing the main channel of the Ottawa River southeast of Pembroke, Ontario, and linking the Province of Ontario to the Municipality of Isle-aux-Allumettes, in Quebec. The structure comprises of two box girders composed of 22 segments, for a total of 1,880 tons of steel components. The complexity of this project lay in the weight of the girders, some of which weighting as much as 91 tons, and the tight deadline. The bridge opened to traffic in August 2015.

The CISC Design Awards Gala is an annual event celebrating the various teams that join forces to execute complex and innovative steel projects. The different awards conferred in the scope of the gala are unique in that they are jointly awarded to the project owner, architect, engineer, contractor, fabricator and detailer.

Canam Group Shines Outside Québec with Four CISC Awards of Excellence

Canam Group and its business units took center stage at the Canadian Institute of Steel Construction (CISC) Alberta and Ontario Steel Design Awards that took place in Edmonton and Toronto last May 4 and 9 respectively. The following projects took a total of four awards:

CISC — Alberta Chapter

Division: Canam-Structures

Category: Collaboration

Rogers Place, Edmonton, Alberta. The Collaboration Award is presented to the project team who demonstrates “added value” to the project through collaborative project delivery approaches throughout the design and/or construction process. To illustrate the scale of the Rogers Place arena project, 9,000 tons of structural steel components and over 8,000 shop drawings entered into its construction. The girder that towers over the centre of the arena is 338 feet (103 m) long and weighs 400 tons.

CISC — Ontario Chapter

Division: Canam-Bridges

Category: Bridges

Burgoyne Bridge, St. Catharines, Ontario. The Award of Excellence in the Bridges category recognizes vehicle and pedestrian bridges in which structural steel is the primary building material, with judges focusing particularly on fabrication and erection challenges. The Burgoyne Bridge is a seven-lane, 1,090-feet (333-m) highway bridge. The bridge structure is composed of 2,830 tons of steel components and incorporates 44 pot bearings as well as four modular expansion joints fabricated by Goodco Z-Tech, a product of Canam-Bridges.

Division: Canam-Structures

Category: Engineering

The BMO Field expansion project in Toronto, Ontario, received the Award of Excellence in the Engineering category, which recognizes buildings, process plants or other structures in which engineering considerations predominantly influenced the design and construction of the structure. The second phase of this expansion project consisted in the fabrication and installation of a partial roof composed of three canopies.

From a technical standpoint, the roof is suspended from the girder that sits above it. The roof was first assembled on the ground and then installed on shoring towers that were subsequently removed using a complex procedure. The rounded shape of the column members and main girders also required non-standard connections, all of which were designed by the Canam-Structures engineering team.

Division: Canam-Buildings

Category: Architectural

The Vaughan Civic Centre Resource Library project in Vaughan, Ontario, received an Award of Excellence in Architecture, a category that recognizes buildings or other structures in which architectural considerations predominantly influenced the design of the structure.

Canam-Buildings supplied the steel deck components for this 36,000-square feet (3,306-m2 ) library, a project designed to meet LEED® Silver certification requirements.

Congratulations to all the winners!

A Canam-Buildings Project Wins a Design Award

It was with great pride that members of the Canam-Buildings team learned that the Philip Simmons High School project in Charleston, South Carolina, won a 2017 Design Award in the “Unique” category. These awards are given out by the Steel Joist Institute based on criteria such as speed of construction, value and aesthetic considerations.

The jury was won over by the use of girders 120 inches (3 metres) deep and 118 feet (36 metres) long, double pitched joists spanning 60 feet (18 metres), KCS joists and standard sloping joists. The use of sloping and double pitched joists offered the architect the ability to design high and low roofs that blend with the architecture style of the Charleston area.

Building this 214,000 square foot (19,881 m2) project required us to fabricate 275 tons of joists and girders, 37,500 square feet (3,484 m2) of Reveal Series steel deck, 94,700 square feet (8,798 m2) of roof deck and 87,500 square feet (8,129 m2) of Lok-Floor deck. All steel components were fabricated at the Canam Group plant in Jacksonville, Florida.

Congratulations to all the teams that participated in the construction of this project!
