To accommodate the passengers of the Quebec City Jean-Lesage International Airport, a temporary 165-meter corridor is now operational. Canam-Buildings designed, manufactured, assembled and produced it in only ten weeks – 4 days before due date – with its BuildMaster approach.

AIQ CanamBuildings

Canam-Buildings designed, manufactured, assembled and produced it in only ten weeks – 4 days before due date – with its BuildMaster approach.

Designed with Murox prefabricated wall panels (a total of 128), steel structure and joists (over 100 tons) and steel deck (2,400 m2), this project was built on the existing tarmac, without foundations. “We had to take into account certain constraints to achieve this unusual project, among others, vibrations due to passenger movement, a steel foundation resting on the tarmac, a structure with multiple angles, sloping floor and a connection to an existing building on two floors”, said François Morissette, Business Development Representative. But the challenge has been met! Moreover, it could be dismantled and reinstalled for further use in the late expansion work of the airport in 2018.

Joël Nadeau, Senior Vice President of Canam-Buildings, proudly accepted his appointment to the position of Chairman of the Board of Directors of Steel Plus Network (SPN), a steel industry organization that works to leverage the collective buying power of its members.

Joel-Nadeau

The SPN Purchasing Program enables member companies big and small to take advantage of volume discounts, obtain enhanced services and strengthen their business ties. SPN also assists its members by providing operational support and consulting services in the area of products, equipment, training and other activities.

The new Chairman of the Board made the following point: “SPN member fabricators face the same challenges today as they did when the organization was first created, i.e. increasing profitability, maintaining a steady workload, improving manufacturing efficiency, receiving shop drawings promptly and continued access to qualified personnel in order to ensure the perennity of their business activities. Canam is highly attentive to the needs of its customers, and given that SPN members form part of our established clientele, I’ve accepted this role so that I may contribute to the development of solutions that will help them meet these ongoing challenges.”

Joël Nadeau joined Canam Group in 1985, 25 years of which were spent in the sales division, working his way up from representative to the vice presidency of Canam-Buildings.

Canam-Buildings and Canam-Bridges stood out prominently at the CISC Design Awards, taking home two awards each at the gala held on October 29th under the theme “Contribution of the Steel Industry to the World of Music and the Arts”.

Industrial Projects

Canam-Buildings received an award in the Industrial Projects category for its participation in the PJC Head Office and Distribution Center project in Varennes, Quebec. In addition to housing administrative offices and a warehouse, this 860,500 sq. ft. (79,943 m2) facility includes a fitness center, a daycare, a cafeteria and many other commodities for the employees. This project included joists – some measuring up to 80 ft. (24 m) – girders, bridgings, purlins and girts, welded wide-flange sections (WWF), steel deck and acoustic deck for the office section. The distribution center is due to become operational in January 2016.

Jury Favorite

Canam-Buildings took home the Jury Favorite award for its contribution to the Cogeco Amphitheatre project in Trois-Rivières. This complex structure of 150,700 sq. ft. (14,000 m2) features two partitions at the rear of the building, called for specially shaped joists with large cantilevers and sloped lower chords in order to form the particular triangular shape. In addition to the joists, which had to be delivered in two sections and bolted directly onto the structure, girders and steel deck were also fabricated for this project. Inaugurated in July 2015, the construction has a vast stage and covered seating for 3,500 spectators as well as an outdoor landscaped amphitheatre.

Projects Outside Quebec

Canam-Bridges received an award in the Projects Outside Quebec category for its participation in the Hunt Club Pathway Connection to the Southeast Transitway Station project, a 246-ft. (75 m) pedestrian bridge erected over the Ottawa Airport Parkway to link the Hunt Club community and the Southeast Transitway in Ottawa, Ontario. The bridge structure is composed of three orthotropic steel deck panels – with the longest span measuring 167 ft. (51 m) – and required complex fabrication operations during the assembly and welding of the various components. The bridge opened to pedestrians and cyclists in November 2014.

Bridge Projects

Canam-Bridges also received an award in the Bridge Projects category for its participation in the construction of the Des Allumettes Bridge, a 919-ft. (280 m) highway bridge crossing the main channel of the Ottawa River southeast of Pembroke, Ontario, and linking the Province of Ontario to the Municipality of Isle-aux-Allumettes, in Quebec. The structure comprises of two box girders composed of 22 segments, for a total of 1,880 tons of steel components. The complexity of this project lay in the weight of the girders, some of which weighting as much as 91 tons, and the tight deadline. The bridge opened to traffic in August 2015.

The CISC Design Awards Gala is an annual event celebrating the various teams that join forces to execute complex and innovative steel projects. The different awards conferred in the scope of the gala are unique in that they are jointly awarded to the project owner, architect, engineer, contractor, fabricator and detailer.

The Billy Bishop Toronto Airport pedestrian tunnel, a Canam-Buildings’ project, won an award at the December 2nd banquet of the Ontario Concrete Awards (OCA) held in conjunction with the Concrete Canada trade show, part of Construct Canada.

 Structural Design Innovation Category

An innovative pre-support technique was used to drill seven 1.85-metre-diameter interlocking drift bores, or mini tunnels, above the main tunnel crown using boring machines. The drifts allowed excavation to continue under the crown, while enabling the tunnel to hold its shape. It was the first time in Canada that such a technique was used.

The Billy Bishop Toronto Airport pedestrian tunnel connects the Bathurst Street Terminal to the airport located on an island just opposite. This tunnel allows users to make the crossing in about six minutes and is a complement to the current ferry service. Canam-Buildings provided 1,201 m2 of steel deck for the construction of this tunnel.

An unusual discovery on a construction site

A Canam-Buildings’ project, currently underway in Boston, Massachusetts, had to temporarily halt the operations due to the discovery of a shipwreck apparently dating from the 19th century by the building team last May.

A 50 ft (15.2 m) long wooden ship from probably the 1800s was sleeping 25 ft (7.6 m) into the ground! According to archaeologists’ hypothesis, the ship was either stuck in a mudflat at low tide or could have washed up there after a storm. Moreover, it seems she was carrying barrels of lime for masonry or construction as wood, nails, lime and metal pieces were found on board of the wreck.

WorkSite Boat

The general contractor Skanska took the decision to halt the construction for a few days to let archaeologists examine and collect artifacts on the 121 Seaport Boulevard site, where a 400,000 ft2 (37,161 m2) building is under construction with Canam joists. A decision that was much appreciated by the City of Boston considering the importance of this discovery and given the delay and the costs for Skanska with the halt of the construction.

A historical discovery that will be talked about in the area!
