Everyone plays an important role when it comes to health and safety on construction sites!

To promote health and safety and encourage their employees to get involved, Canam Buildings has recently established a number of initiatives, including Safety Training for Canam job site visitors. Moreover, in the past few weeks, Canam introduced a Health and Safety Excellence Award for employees in all Canam joists and deck locations. This awareness is also present among our business partners, including Pomerleau, who also recognizes the importance of a health and safety recognition program. Recognizing leadership and outstanding performance as part of a safe work environment is the object of this program.

Canam Buildings Health and Safety Crew of the Month at the Willow Square project

We are proud to announce that the Canam Buildings – Hambro team, led by Pier-Luc Samson, Project Manager, and Behtash Abdi, Director, Project Management, won the honors last February on the Willow Square seniors’ residence project located in Fort McMurray, Alberta.

This distinction was awarded by Pomerleau to the team of Canam Buildings and its subcontractor Tom Dolarakis. The latter was responsible for the fabrication of the load-bearing steel stud walls on-site and the installation of walls, structure and Hambro D500 composite floor. The team distinguished itself by demonstrating significant improvement in areas of previous struggles.

As mentioned by Mr. Dolarakis, Health and safety is a team effort:

“As leader of my crew, I find it very important to put safety first. I go to work every day knowing that my guys and I have each other’s back, and we are constantly watching one another. Being an ironworker is a challenging task as we work at heights and in other dangerous situations.”

Congratulations to the entire team who demonstrated exemplary behavior, a model of success for our future turnkey projects.

Canam’s services were selected for the design, fabrication and installation of the entire building envelope of the warehouse space Coastal Forest Products located in Bow, New Hampshire.

The construction, 243,200 square feet (22,594 square meters) in size and with a vertical clearance of 32 feet, includes a two-story office space.

This time-lapse video allows you to see how the design-build approach and the Murox prefabricated wall system helped reduce the installation time frame by one month in order to finish the project before winter.

The success of this project is the result of the close collaboration of all partners, a goal that can be better achieved through the implementation of the design-build approach which offers several advantages:

  • Simplified communication between the client and the various stakeholders;
  • Minimizing risks and reducing overall costs;
  • The speed of execution and the overlap of the design and construction phases.

The project’s biggest challenge was to deliver the steel to the site located at the top of the mountain at 3,100 ft. (940 m) of elevation. Canam had to team up with an excavation company that uses heavy equipment. As the saying goes: ‘‘If the mountain will not come to you, you must go to the mountain!’’

The Canam driver delivered the materials at the foot of the mountain and had to leave the trailer, which was hooked to an army BMY 6×6 truck. At times during the ascent, this truck had to be pulled by a John Deere 548 skidder to reach the top.

PlanGrid is a construction productivity software that allows an entire team to access project plans.

This tool is very useful on a construction site where the users can add photos taken on site and link them to a specific location on the plan, record observations and request information, identify anomalies on site and document them simply by using their device.

This technology facilitates the collection of information in synchronization with the entire team.

Group of Employees with PlanGrid Banner

“PlanGrid is our main tool in management and on site to have the information at hand. It allows the entire team to stay connected to the latest plans and perform our daily reports while saving money and time,” says Elio Perrazzino, Project Management, Manager, Canam Buildings.

Canam takes advantage of this technology, with a paper reduction as an added bonus!

Case study: Delta Hotels Thunder Bay project

During the design phase of the Delta Hotels in Thunder Bay, Ontario, the owner identified some problems that could not be solved by conventional construction methods without incurring additional costs. With a limited budget and a tight schedule, he reached out to Canam to handle the following problems:

  • Lack of space for the HVAC systems, electrical conduits and plumbing
  • Fire resistance for a building with a constant flow of customers
  • Soundproofing for bedrooms and other areas.

Space for systems and conduits

The open-web concept of the Hambro composite floor system was the ideal solution for the space problem. Indeed, it allowed an easy installation of the mechanical systems such as HVAC (heating, ventilation, air conditioning), electrical conduits and plumbing. This resulted in additional space being freed on each floor.

Safer, noise-proof buildings

Hambro composite floors have fire resistance properties and comply with UL/ULC standards, ideal for buildings with multiple fire risks. This composite floor system was combined with soundproofed load-bearing steel stud wall panels, which increased the soundproofing of each space.

“So that’s how Hambro really revolutionized the industry.”
⎼ Joe Bova, CEO & Partner of ReSolve Project Management Ltd. & Owner of the Delta Hotels Thunder Bay

A collaborative partnership

By combining Canam’s team of engineering experts, with the architect, general contractor and owner right from the moment the plans and engineering drawings were prepared, the risk of errors was minimized and costs were ultimately saved.

“Canam’s knowledge allowed to build a much better hotel.”

Canam Forms its First Advisory Council

Canam has established an Advisory Council made up of Canam clients and managers. The members of this Council gathered for the first time during the event that took place from October 20 to 23, 2019 in Montreal.

This event is a follow-up to the Roundtable meetings that took place from mid-September to mid-October 2019. Two customers from each region were selected to participate in these meetings representing the regions from Western, Center, Eastern and Atlantic Provinces in Canada, as well as Western, Midwest, Southeast, and Mid-Atlantic regions in the United States. This 14-member Council will work for two years on potential strategies to move the sector forward.

“We definitely want to be able to help our customers win more work and make more money with Canam. A large opportunity exists in collaborating with our customers to work out how we and our customers can become a catalyst to create efficiency in the construction process. Traditional thinking would look only within the joist, deck fabricated steel and steel erection as areas we can impact ”‚ said Tom Gilligan, President, Joists and Deck at Canam.

He added: “If we can think more comprehensively about the construction process, a much bigger opportunity presents itself. The structural steel package, inclusive of joist and deck, is a critical path to the construction process, so many other crafts and trades are dependent on what Canam and our customers can deliver. Working together we have the potential to favorably impact other crafts and trades while bringing value to the key stakeholders in the construction process.”

During this first meeting, Mr. Laurier Trudeau, Vice President of Field Operations at Abesco Ltd. was elected First Chairman of the Council by his peers. As Chairman, Mr. Trudeau will work closely with Tom Gilligan and Mike Holleran, Regional General Manager – Central Canada and Vice-President, Sales Program Support at Canam, in leading the Council members, forming meeting agendas, facilitating discussion and determining priorities.

Canam is proud to have such great representation on this Council and extremely pleased to have Mr. Trudeau as Chairman.

With the future of the construction industry at heart, Canam initiated the Future Leaders program, which aims at better understanding the challenges of those under 35 years of age in this field.

This highly curated think tank program, held in Boston, Massachusetts last December, brought together fourteen participants from different areas of the industry.

Engineers, architects, general contractors, steel fitters and other professionals pondered upon ways to actively contribute to future improvements by exchanging ideas, exploring new perspectives and delving into current and future challenges. These discussions were supported by renowned speakers.

“The interests of the major players of the construction industry are not always aligned, but it is obvious that they are all interdependent. It was very encouraging to see young leaders from technology companies, engineering, construction, fabrication and erection discuss a more collaborative, more innovative future and, as they rightly said, more inclusive for women,” said Marc Dutil, President and CEO, Canam Group.

The group will meet twice a year and will strive to build the future of construction together.
